رییس هیات ورزش روستایی و بازی‌های بومی محلی گنبدکاووس با اشاره به فعالیت بیش از ۴ هزار ورزشکار در رشته‌های مختلف بازی‌های بوم محلی، گفت: سه ورزشکار و یک مربی از این شهرستان در رشته‌های «فوتوالی» و کشتی «گورش» عضو تیم‌های ملی جمهوری اسلامی ایران هستند.
ابراهیم ملاتش روز یکشنبه در گفت و گویی اظهارداشت: «فرشاد پورفرزاد» و «عارف صفایی» به عنوان بازیکن و «وحید ایمری» به عنوان مربی از گنبدکاووس تنها نمایندگان استان گلستان در اردوی تیم ملی «فوتوالی» شناخته می‌شوند.
وی از فعالیت حدود ۲۰۰ کشتی‌گیر در رشته گورش در گنبدکاووس خبر داد و گفت: مسابقات اخیر این رشته به میزبانی استان خراسان‌شمالی برای انتخابی تیم ملی در سه وزن با هدف اعزام به مسابقات عشایر جهان مهر ماه امسال به میزبانی ترکیه برگزار شد.
رییس هیات ورزش روستایی و بازی‌های بومی محلی گنبدکاووس ادامه داد: «قاسم دازی» ورزشکار این شهرستان در وزن ۸۲ کیلوگرم توانست با برد حریفان و کسب عنوان قهرمانی این مسابقات به تیم ملی راه یابد و ادامه این مسابقات در هشت وزن دیگر به مناسبت گرامیداشت هفته دفاع مقدس به میزبانی بندرترکمن برگزار می‌شود.
ملاتش ابراز امیدواری کرد: تعدادی بیشتری از گورش‌کاران گنبدکاووس با شرکت در این دوره از مسابقات که برای نخستین بار به صورت ساحلی در استان گلستان برگزار می‌شود، کرسی‌های تیم ملی را از آن خود کنند.
وی بیان کرد: ورزشکاران سازماندهی شده در رشته‌های روستایی و بازی‌های بومی محلی در گنبدکاووس با استفاده از زمین‌های خاکی در مناطق مختلف و ۱۶ خانه ورزش روستایی همواره در حال انجام تمرین و برگزاری مسابقات هستند.
شهرستان ۴۱۱ هزار نفری گنبدکاووس افزون بر ۹ هزار ورزشکار سازماندهی شده دارد که در قالب ۳۸ هیأت ورزشی مشغول فعالیت هستند.
